At least three people were killed in a shooting at Michigan State University on Monday night, which triggered an hours-long manhunt for the suspected gunman later found dead by the police and marked the latest shooting inside an educational institution.

The university’s campus will remain closed for 48 hours and all classes and extracurricular activities during this period have been canceled.

Police are yet to establish a motive for the shooting, but said the suspect was 43 years old and appeared to have no connection to the university.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) tweeted: “Parents across Michigan are on pins and needles calling their kids tonight, checking in on them and telling them they love them. It doesn’t have to be this way. This is a uniquely American problem. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them. We plan who that last text or call would go to. We should not, we cannot, accept living like this.”
