The shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio late Saturday night came as the area’s large Asian-American community celebrated Lunar New Year, but the suspect’s motive remains unclear. The alleged shooter—72-year-old Huu Can Tran—died Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with police about 20 miles away. Authorities say Tran visited another suburban dance studio in nearby Alhambra shortly after carrying out the Monterey Park shooting, but two people disarmed him before he could start shooting. Tran carried out the shooting using a semi-automatic pistol with a high-capacity magazine, according to police.
