Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made his first tangible progress toward becoming House speaker since voting started Tuesday, flipping the votes Friday of 15 Republicans who opposed him in earlier rounds, in a major sign of encouragement for a bid that McCarthy believes will make him speaker overnight.

Several of the dissenters flipping their votes said there’s been progress in negotiations with McCarthy’s camp, which made some significant concessions to secure support, such as allowing for a “motion to vacate” that could allow the House to replace its speaker mid-term. According to Politico, some of the roughly 200 loyal backers who had voted for him on every ballot heading into Friday were beginning to grow impatient with the process, and speculation was growing an alternative candidate could be put forward, such as Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who became the favorite in betting odds to win the speakership during earlier rounds where McCarthy struggled.
