'ផ្អែកលើរឿងពិត' របស់ក្ងោកគឺជារដូវក្តៅដ៏ល្អឥតខ្ចោះ

There’s no denying that we are a society that is collectively fascinated with true crime. But why are we so obsessed? Maybe it’s a bit of could-this-happen-to-me-or-someone-I-love? Or, perhaps we wonder if we could ever be pushed off that sharp-edged cliff into the abyss of insanity?

Whatever the root of the obsession, we cannot satiate our appetite for the whodunit or the whydunit, and Peacock’s new dramedy-slash-(pun intended)-thriller ផ្អែកលើរឿងពិត brilliantly satirizes not the horrific crimes but that incessant need for us to play armchair detective.

In this case, it’s also a cautionary tale of what happens when you make a deal with the devil. You will, eventually, get some of that blood on yourself. Though it may not seem like a comedy, it is a laugh-out-loud romp on the dark side.

ផ្អែកលើរឿងពិត is about a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize the opportunity to capitalize on our obsession with murder by starting a podcast.

There is, after all, serious money in murder. Remember when the កាសែត New York Times acquired Serial Productions, the podcast company behind the hit សៀរៀល, for $25 million in cash?

Kaley Cuoco’s Ava Bartlett knows everything about true crime and the business behind it. Cuoco, well-known for her role in អ្នកចូលរួមក្នុងការហោះហើរ, stars as a pregnant wife and true-crime-obsessed realtor who hasn’t had much luck selling a home in a while. Side note: the bump is real, and the script was rewritten around her pregnancy.

Ava is married to Nathan, played by Chris Messina (អ៊ែរ), a former tennis pro who suffered an injury that ended his career. The down-on-their-luck couple faces a mounting pile of unpaid bills when they befriend the charming Matt, portrayed by Tom Bateman (ដប់បី Lives), a plumber who comes to fix their toilet.

Ava is following the news of a serial killer who is terrorizing Los Angeles, and she devises a plan to change their lives and fatten their bank accounts. Her solution to their money woes is to get into the lucrative world of true crime podcasts. The catch? She wants to do business with the killer.

The series comes from Craig Rosenberg, Jason Bateman, and Michael Costigan. Rosenberg, known for hits including ក្មេងប្រុសនេះ និង Gen V, serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Bateman and Costigan executive produce.

Rosenberg found himself fascinated with this true crime obsession. He wrote a note to the media describing how he came up with the idea for the series. He isn’t underestimating the worldwide interest, which has catapulted the genre into the mainstream.

“Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. Podcasts, documentaries, and fictional shows based on true stories dominate the culture,” Rosenberg wrote. “Murderers have become celebrities, and celebrities have become murderers, which inspired me to create this show.”

He then went on to describe how he created this cast of characters. “I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn’t come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage. Our Los Angeles setting, the city where everybody wants to be famous, became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder.”

With laugh-out-loud one-liners and Cuoco, Messina, and Bateman’s spot-on delivery of them, ផ្អែកលើរឿងពិត is the perfect four-hour escape. True crime fans can binge all eight episodes on June 8 on Peacock. Lock your doors and windows, and enjoy!

Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Li Jun Li round out this fabulously funny cast.
